US govt considers adding Chinese chipmaker SMIC to Entity List

2020-09-08 09:12:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) The US Department of Defense said on 5 September that it was thinking of adding Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) to the Department of Commerce's so-called Entity List, media reports said. China's SMIC provides chips to Qualcomm, Broadcom, and Texas Instruments, among others. The Entity list imposes license requirements for products set for export. The US recently tightened that list, to "prevent Huawei's attempts to circumvent US export controls to obtain electronic components developed or produced using US technology," the department said. US officials have long alleged that Chinese tech firms pose national security risks.
