The President said he appreciated India's positions in support of the Sudan in international fora. Sudan's Foreign Minister, Ali Karti, said Mr. Khurshid had assured the President that India will continue to support programs and projects to help Sudan in its fight against poverty. India is working in a number of different areas including sugar and electricity production and distribution as well as offering scholarships to Sudanese students. Mr. Khurshid arrived in Khartoum on Tuesday for a two day visit. His discussions with Sudan's Foreign Minister focused on trade as well as cooperation in agriculture and manufacturing. The value of trade between the two countries will reach nearly US$1billion at the end of this fiscal year. Mr. Khurshid noted India was an active partner in development projects in Sudan, especially in the sugar industry and the modernization of irrigation, and is funding of a thermal plant expected to produce about 500 megawatts of energy.
