Yet another way that humans are wrecking tropical forests
2015-12-19 15:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Washington Post: If the world is going to meet its goal of limiting planetary warming to less than 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, well have to burn dramatically fewer fossil fuels -- but thats not enough. Well also need nature on our side, and that means dramatically halting the rate of deforestation so that tropical forests around the world stop losing their carbon to the atmosphere (currently contributing between 7 to 17 percent of global emissions) and start pulling it in again. A new study...

Turns out ancient humans were bad for nature, too!

Grist: Humans got a new nickname this week: The Agents of Disturbance. And boy, do we deserve it. In a new study published in the journal Nature, researchers report that humans have been agents of disturbance on this planet roughly since the dawn of civilization. Starting around 6,000 years ago, we began to fundamentally change the way that plants and other animals coexist something that even mass extinctions and severe climate change havent been able to do on their own. Its not clear exactly how...
Polar Bears Are Spending More Time on LandAnd That Could Be Bad for Humans
2015-11-19 15:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Washington Post: In recent years, polar bears have become the lovable poster children for climate change in the Arctic. And as their preferred sea ice habitat continues to diminish year after year, thanks to warming temperatures in the region, it seems theres no end to the polar bears troubles. Now, a new study in PLOS One has brought to light one more problem for one more polar bear population. Bears in the Chukchi Sea region -- thats the body of water between Russia and Alaska -- are spending more time on...

MIT presents tech for detecting humans behind walls
2015-10-30 09:41:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) A team of researchers at MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab (CSAIL) created a new wireless technology called RF Capture that detects wireless reflections off the human body to see the silhouette of humans standing behind walls, according to MIT News. To be presented in a paper accepted to the Siggraph Asia conference taking place in November, the technology can be used by firefighters to check if there are survivors inside a burning building or by mothers who want to monitor their baby's breathing, for instance. It can also be used in smarthomes and for virtual reality applications and Hollywood productions.
