Vodafone Australia to shut down 2G network in Sept 2017

2016-09-30 11:58:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Vodafone Australia announced plans to shut down its GSM network on 30 September 2017. It is the last of the three operators to announce the planned 2G closure, with Telstra shutting down its network at the end of this year and Optus next year. Vodafone said the 2G network carries less than 1 percent of its data traffic and only 2 percent of voice traffic. The 4G network now accounts for almost 90 percent of data traffic, and Vodafone has already refarmed some GSM spectrum for the LTE network. Vodafone is launching a 12-month campaign to make customers aware of the plans and move them to the 3G and 4G networks. Its 3G phones start from AUD 29 and 4G devices from AUD 99.
